  Ambush

  Therestwaseasy.TheymadeaquickboattriptoSolomons,wherePamwasabletobuyafewsimplethings.Abeautyshoptrimmedherhair.BytheendofhersecondweekwithKelly,she‘dstartedtorunandhadgainedweight.Alreadyshecouldwearatwo-pieceswimsuitwithoutanovertdisplayofherribcage.Herlegmusclesweretoningup;whathadbeenslackwasnowtaut,asitoughttobeonagirlherage.Shestillhadherdemons.TwiceKellywoketofindhertrembling,sweating,andmurmuringsoundsthatneverquiteturnedintowordsbutwereeasilyunderstood.Bothtimeshistouchcalmedher,butnothim.SoonhewasteachinghertorunSpringer,andwhateverthedefectsinherschooling,shewassmartenough.Shequicklygraspedhowtodothethingsthatmostboatersneverlearned.Heeventookherswimming,surprisedsomehowthatshe‘dlearnedtheskillinthemiddleofTexas.

  Mainlyhelovedher,thesight,thesound,thesmell,andmostofallthefeelofPamMadden.Kellyfoundhimselfslightlyanxiousifhefailedtoseehereveryfewminutes,asthoughshemightsomehowdisappear.Butshewasalwaysthere,catchinghiseye,smilingbackplayfully.Mostofthetime.Sometimeshe‘dcatchherwithadifferentexpression,allowingherselftolookbackintothedarknessofherpastorforwardintoanalternatefuturedifferentfromthatwhichhehadalreadyplanned.Hefoundhimselfwishingthathecouldreachintohermindandremovethebadparts,knowingthathewouldhavetotrustotherstodothat.Atthosetimes,andtheothers,forthemostpart,he‘dfindanexcusetoheadherway,andlethisfingertipsglideoverhershoulder,justtobesuresheknewthathewasthere.

  TendaysafterSamandSarahhadleft,theyhadalittleceremony.Helethertaketheboatout,tiethebottleofphenobarbitaltoalargerock,anddumpitovertheside.Thesplashitmadeseemedafittingandfinalendtooneofherproblems.Kellystoodbehindher,hisstrongarmsaboutherwaist,watchingtheotherboatstravelingtheBay,andhelookedintoafuturebrightwithpromise.
