  Itwashisfirst-evervisittothePentagon.Kellyfeltillatease,wonderingifheshouldhavewornhiskhakichiefsuniform,buthistimeforwearingthathadpassed.Insteadheworeabluelightweightsuit,withaminiatureoftheNavyCrossribbononthelapel.Arrivinginthebusandcartunnel,hewalkeduparampandsearchedforamapofthevastbuilding,whichhequicklyscannedandmemorized.Fiveminuteslaterheenteredtheproperoffice.

  ‘Yes?‘apettyofficerasked.

  ‘JohnKelly,IhaveanappointmentwithAdmiralMaxwell.‘Hewasinvitedtotakeaseat.OnthecoffeetablewasacopyofNavyTimes,whichhehadn‘treadsinceleavingtheservice.ButKellywasabletocontrolhisnostalgia.Thebitchesandgripeshereadabouthadn‘tchangedverymuch.

  ‘MrKelly?‘avoicecalled.Heroseandwalkedthroughtheopendoor.Afteritclosed,areddo-not-disturblightblinkedontowarnpeopleoff.

  Kellywasn‘tequippedtounderstandthelooksyet.Hedidn‘treallythinkoftheadmiralsasoldorevenastotallyhuman.Theywereadmirals,godlike,agelessbeingswhomadeimportantdecisionsandlookedastheyshouldlook,eventheoneoutofuniform.NordidKellythinkofhimselfasyoung.He‘dseencombat,afterwhicheverymanisforeverchanged.Buttheirperspectivewasdifferent.ToMaxwell,Podulski,andGreer,thisyoungmanwasnotterriblyunlikewhattheyhadbeenthirtyyearsearlier.ItwasinstantlyclearthatKellywasawarrior,andinseeinghimtheysawthemselves.Thefurtivelookstheytradedwerenotunlikethoseofagrandfatherwatchinghisgrandsontakehisfirsttentativestepontheliving-roomrug.Butthesewerelargerandmoreserioussteps.
